5 tips for training your dog

Molly Patterson, January 10, 2024

It is important to teach your dog to obey certain directions. While many commands are simply for fun, such as “play dead,” or “turn over,”, other cues are essential for getting along with humans and other dogs. Dogs must learn to eat when called, sit when asked, control their barking, and learn to socialize, among others.

Although it may seem that our dog has habits that are impossible to correct, we can always use training tips to train our faithful companions to learn more easily. In addition to using a woodcock collar, these simple instructions will help you train your dog to do anything, without violence or frustration.

  1. Become a companion

One of the most important steps in training your dog, and the first one you should take, is to become your dog’s friend. You must establish a positive relationship with him from the beginning. Puppies love praise and hugs, just like human babies Dog obedience training Houston. Your consistent attitude toward your dog will develop into a relationship of trust, making it easier to train your pet when the time comes. If you have a puppy, wait about three months before trying to train it. You need the time at home to become familiar with your surroundings and routines.

  1. Communicate effectively
One of the most important tips for training dogs is to use positive reinforcement and praise, instead of negative reinforcement. Be patient and give your dog or puppy several tries until they are able to do what you are trying to teach them. Praise them with positive words, rewards and petting.

Speak using a dominant voice and short phrases and repeat the same phrases each time you work with your dog. For example, if you are trying to teach him to sit, each time he does it say, “That’s great, sit down!” and give him a prize.

  1. Be patient and constant
You must take the time to train your dog correctly. Work with him as much as possible each day and find time to dedicate to him. Be consistent while he trains and don’t give up. It may take a few weeks before you see any progress, but you must keep at it because little by little you will see results and only with consistency will you achieve your goals.

If you are leaving the training of your pet in the hands of third parties and you want your dog to also obey you and other members of your family, you must also participate in the training process. You can start with just one person at first, then once the dog begins to become familiar with each command, involve other family members.

  1. Become the leader
Dogs have a natural instinct to follow the pack leader and one of the great dog training tips that many people don’t get right is to make sure THEY are the pack leader. You must establish your dominance as the leader, so that your dog is willing to obey you. You achieve this with actions such as eating yourself before feeding your dog.
  2. Timing is everything
Scolding your dog when you get home because he has urinated in the house but hours before you have discovered it will lead to confusion. Your dog won’t necessarily put two and two together. You must catch the dog in the act and firmly say, “No.” and take it outside. Every time he knows how to wait to urinate in the street, reward him with hugs and treats until it becomes a natural behavior for him.
