5 things to keep in mind when adopting a dog

Molly Patterson, January 30, 2024

Sharing life with a furry friend and adopting a dog is one of the best things you can do in this world. There is no doubt about that.

You can save a life and offer them the best of you. However, it is something that should not be done lightly. After all, dogs are living beings that have their needs, they get sick , they need company and games, etc. Therefore, the best thing to always do, to do things right, is to stop and consider some points to keep in mind before adopting a best family pets.

Before adopting a dog, ask yourself this
Don’t take it lightly and think about it carefully, it is a responsibility that you will have for a long time.

  1. Will I be able to dedicate quality time to it?
You have just brought home a living being, which will require your time and dedication . Your new companion not only expects you to feed him, take care of him and keep him in good hygienic and sanitary conditions, he will also need you to dedicate time to him.

Playing, education, caressing, communication… That quality time that you dedicate is what will create the bond between the two of you , which will make your faithful friend grow up happy. Therefore, it is not enough to know that you can take care of him and meet all his needs, but also that you will be able to spend time with him. It is not something to overlook, it is a very important point to keep in mind before adopting a dog.

  1. Can I financially afford to cover your needs?
Your new companion is above all a living being that will need to eat, go to the vet, toys, treats, etc. Having a dog is very rewarding, the company of an animal is a wonderful thing, but you must ask yourself if you are going to be able to afford to meet his needs: take him to the vet if he gets sick; give him quality food to keep him healthy; occasionally buy him a treat, a prize or toy, etc.
  2. What breed should I choose when adopting a dog?
If you want to adopt a purebred dog and not a mixed breed, this is a very important point to keep in mind. There are breeds that need more space than others, more exercise, more care, etc. If you value your lifestyle, the space you have at home, your budget, etc., you will be able to better choose which breed will be the most suitable for you.
  3. Can I commit to taking care of it for at least the next 15 years?
If you adopt a puppy , you should consider whether you will be able to take care of it for at least the next 15 years . He will be your responsibility, he will depend on you, and he will go through all the stages of his life. You will have to take care of him while he is a puppy, during his growth, and also when he is old. Think carefully before taking it home with you.
  4. Will it be compatible with my lifestyle habits?
Last but not least, you should ask yourself if your lifestyle is compatible with having a dog at home. If you have to travel very often, if you have a job that demands too much of your time, etc., it may not be the time to share your life with a dog.
